TBH I always saw the Jedi as the Jannissaries. Also recruited young, also taken away and not supposed to marry or have any other attachment than to their corps and to the Sublime Porte. Some parents saw it as an opportunity for social advancement, some others did everything that was in their power to prevent the "tribute" from being collected.
In addition, I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I 100% think that the Jedi Order is a cult that has a lot of potential for emotional and religious abuse (it happens in canon) and that is functional to the maintenance of the Status Quo in the Galactic Republic in economic and social terms. Any comparisons with Christian religious authorities is pretty much spot on IMHO.
