I really liked that about Terrier. It would have been easy to write a fantasy story where all the heroes have the attitudes of our current culture and the only cops taking bribes are the baddies, but instead Pierce wrote characters who are at home in a culture that's different to ours and is maybe on the way to getting better, but doesn't have to be transformed into our culture to make a happy ending.
