Flashback Friday: The Thing With Wings
May. 3rd, 2019 09:20 amTitle: The Thing With Wings
Fandom: Avatar: The Last Airbender/ Legend of Korra
Characters: Aang, Bumi II
Rating: PG
Length: 589
Summary: Aang had a son. He would teach him airbending and never be alone again.
That episode in season 2 where the cloud kids talk about their Aang-related issues kind of broke me. I actually have two different stories that deal with Aang's blatant favoritism of his airbending son. This is the one from Aang's POV. He meant well. He loved his son, he really did, but, as the survivor of a genocide, with so much tied up in the idea that airbending=air nomad, he really kind of failed as a parent. I know a lot of people at the time felt it was some kind of slam against him, but honestly, it just made me appreciate him more as a real and nuanced character. People's response to trauma isn't always pretty and he wasn't malicious about it just....messed up.
