Over the weekend, I participated in the Flash in the Pan fic exchange. I got four gifts. Four!

1. Home-cooked meal - by [archiveofourown.org profile] Peggy_Carter46
Agent Carter (TV)

Peggy tried to make a nice meal after Jack is released from the hospital. It doesn't go as planned.

2. A Dam Fine Cup of Coffee by [archiveofourown.org profile] glorious_spoon
Agent Carter (TV)

"So that dishwater you used to inflict on us back in New York was on purpose," Jack said.

Peggy gave him an arch look. "Of course it was."

3. Hospital Dine-in by [archiveofourown.org profile] Peggy_Carter46
Agent Carter (TV)

Peggy's in the hospital after being rescued from Leviathan. Daniel and Jack bring her something to cheer her up.

4. A Good Cup of Coffee by [personal profile] sholio
Agent Carter (TV)

Making coffee is one of Peggy's jobs at the SSR. She's just not very good at it.

And last, but not least, here's my story:

Title: Taste of Nostalgia
Fandom: The Umbrella Academy
Characters: Allison, Vanya
Warning: Discussions of eating disorders, vomit, and Reginald Hargreeve's shitty parenting
Summary: Allison and Vanya visit Griddy's for old times sake.

Read on AO3 or below )

Hey, all. I'm not dead, just really bad about consistent posting. Lately, it's been a real struggle to stay motivated or find pleasure in things which once brought me joy. Is this what depression feels like?

Anyhow, the Worldbuilding Exchange went live and I got not one, but two gifts!

Bats on the Brain
(Batman comics)
Starting from Dick's tenure as Robin, the social media of Gotham reacts to the line of Robins and Batgirls.

This thing is brilliant. The fake social media platform names! The inside jokes! The public reaction to the batfam has never been funnier.

Scrapbook
(Umbrella Academy)
A collection of excerpts from news articles and journals, licensed and unlicensed partially-fictionalized accounts, and (of course) the controversial autobiography by Vanya Hargreeves herself.

So very meta in a way that leaves me wanting more.

I haven't bothered with Thursday recommendations for a while, but this series utterly devoured my brain during the months where it was updated twice-weekly, so I just have to share it now that it's done.

Do you liked Downton Abbey? How about well-researched historical fiction? How about gay romance set against the backdrop of World War I? How do you feel about gross sobbing? I know I did it more than a few times reading it.

I give you the Halo Effect series by [archiveofourown.org profile] Alex51324

Part 1. Halo Effect - When Thomas rescues Lady Mary from the nefarious attentions of Turkish houseguest Kemal Pamuk, his employers and coworkers begin to see him differently...and Things Get Better. A Season One AU diverging from canon in Episode 3, The One Where The Turkish Gentleman Dies in Mary's Bed.

Part 2 - Soldier's Heart - Following the events of "Halo Effect," Thomas Barrow goes to war. A season two AU.

I hear the author plans a season three in the long term, but is currently working on a one-shot set in WWII where Thomas and his boyfriend take in an evacuee from the blitz.

I got interviewed by the local news this morning about the grant project I mentioned recently. It wasn't my first rodeo, but I can remember how nervous I was the first time I had to do it. Here's some tips if you ever need to do it:

1. Have some remarks prepared and memorized. This is especially important if the interview will be airing live, but is handy regardless.

2. Discuss the sorts of questions the reporter wants to ask before the filming starts. This will help establish the limits of your expertise and keep you from being blindsided. This morning, the reporter came in thinking we were putting up an African American exhibit for Black History Month in February. If we hadn't discussed it beforehand the interview would have gone very differently.

3. Look at the reporter, not the camera. Stay calm and speak clearly and you should be okay.

I've been given to understand that Thursdays rec days.

Avamorphs by [archiveofourown.org profile] suzukibu
You ever wanted a fusion between Avatar: the Last Airbender and Katherine Applegates' Anamorphs books? I din't, but I'm so very glad I got one. This started out as a series of prompt fics back on [livejournal.com profile] white_knuckle, but it has grown into so much more.

Let's do it (Part 1)
The gang learns of an alien invasion and shit gets real

These our bodies possessed by light (Part 2)
Some backstory on the Yeerk known as Zuko Five Three Three.

That's just my battle scar (Part 3)
Zuko and his host Lee are a winning combination.

They call kids like us vicious (Part 4)
Lee probably could have used some therapy even before he got infected with an alien brain slug.

Just don't ask me how I am (part 5)
Turns out Sokka probably could have used some therapy before he got embroiled in an intergalactic war.

They ain't seen the last of me and you (part 6)
A mission goes sideways and everyone gets the entirely wrong idea about Zuko.
redrikki: Orange cat, year of the cat (Default)
Last night I had some friends over for Hanakka round two. I know some people like to make full meals out it with a main dish and latkes on the side, but not here, sister. We made a monster stack of latkes and ate them all with sour cream and apple sauce until we were genuinely afraid we might be sick. Then they hung around for the next three hours while we talked about everything from ham radio to our cats to the weirdly alienating experience that is being Jewish in America.

On that note, I have some additional Yuletide recs to share.

Stir and Cook Slowly
(Batwoman (TV 2019))
Mary learns what a yarzheit is. Kate relearns to smile.

In which Kate Kane is unambiguously and unapologetically Jewish and her relationship with Mary is as wholesome as latkes.

The Rubber Shapeshifter Assimilation
The Middleman (TV)
“So once I get all bundled up, what’s with the trip to the South Pole? Killer penguins? Evil Santa? Evil Santa with a tuxedo-clad army of evil penguins?”

It's basically a lost episode of The Middleman complete with spot-on dialogue, cuddling for warmth, and all the romantic tropes you need for a South Pole adventure.

Yuletide 2019 is open, as is Yuletide Madness. They've both been open for several days actually, but I'm lazy and have been too busy marathoning Killing Eve and Lost in Space to post about it. I wrote my main gift in one fandom and a madness treat in another. I had a plan for a third story, but it never jelled. If you can ID one of my stories before the reveal, I'll write one for you. To the people who left prompts on my Gen Bingo card, rest assured I'm working on them in the sense I'm playing with them in my head still.

Anyway, here's my gift and some recs.

Loving every minute 'cause you make me feel so alive
(Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse)
Five times the a-team helped each other out, and one time they helped someone else.

This one was my gift. It's got an interesting blend of movie and comics canon and is queer AF.

talk of the town
(Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse)
"So," Jefferson starts.

"Dad, I swear, I didn't mean to cut Art Club every day this week, it's just—"

"That you're the new Spiderman?" Jefferson says, and oh, damn, that was not the way he wanted to lead into this.

One of the funniest, most heartwarming reveal fics I've read.

the becoming garb of a gentleman
(Temeraire - Naomi Novik)
Temeraire commissions a set of clothing for Laurence.

Temeraire commissions a set of clothing for Laurence and it's the funniest thing. Great Temeraire voice and Laurence's reaction is priceless.

Novo-Arkhangelsk
(Killing Eve (TV 2018))
Alaska is lovely this time of year.

Surreal post-canon tale of love and murder.

This year's Remix Revival is live! Go check it out. I got two stories written for me. If you can guess which one I wrote, I will write you a fic on a topic of your choice. Anyhow, here's my gifts:

Little Girl, Go to War ("Translated from the Original Trigedasleng" Remix)
based on Born to Float (The 100)

Forget born to die -- Octavia thinks she was born to be hated.

A nice, sharp look at Octavia in the later seasons. It makes me wish I'd kept up with the show past season four.

Forever War based on Peace is a Lie (Star Wars)

Vader has trouble distinguishing between the past and the present. Fortunately, it rarely matters in the context of the Empire's forever war.

This takes what I was going for in the original, turns the dial up to 11, and breaks the nob off. Bleak, chilling, and deeply unsettling in the way only Vader can be.

redrikki: Orange cat, year of the cat (Default)
It's Thursday rec day and, boy, do I have some fun recs. When I did the fandoms as relationships meme, I mentioned that Avatar: The Last Airbender is my old flame I enjoy catching up with. I recently caught up with several AUs written by [archiveofourown.org profile] MuffinLance and they are all amazing. Here are my two favorites, but really, they're all good.

Little Zuko v the World - Zuko finds Aang a month into his banishment. They’re both 12.

This was both hilarious and heart warming. Wee!Zuko is an adorably dweeby turtleduck trying his hardest and it's just too precious for words.

Cheating at Pai Sho - "You said you were the Avatar!" "...I lied?" Aang doesn't get rescued from Zuko's ship, and no one's seen him go glowy yet... so he starts bluffing. Hard. Or: "The Avatar joins Zuko's quest to find the Avatar." In which Zuko doesn't join the Gaang, the Gaang joins Zuko.

This is exactly as zany as it sounds. Zuko's not quite season 1 in character, but who cares when his interactions with everyone are this cute?

I think I read enough fic to get in on this Thursday rec thing dreamwidth has going, so here goes!

[personal profile] attackfish, queen of the Avatar AUs, has written a story just for me, but before I can recommend it, I must recommend the rest of the series.

Until the Walls Break Like Waves by [archiveofourown.org profile] attackfish

It was just before the winter solstice when Earth Kingdom soldiers captured the prince of the Fire Nation and his uncle, the Dragon of the West. It was the dead of winter when they were brought to Ba Sing Se.

You want Zuko wump? This has it in spades with a side order of touching family relations and mind bending.

Until the Walls Universe Drabbles by [archiveofourown.org profile] attackfish

Real drabbles are exactly 100 words. This is a hill I will die on, but I'm willing to let it slide for this collection of short stories set in this universe. Strictly speaking, you don't need to have read these for the next story to make sense, but it certainly makes more sense if you read these first.

The Sharpest Rocks Like Just Below the Surface by [archiveofourown.org profile] attackfish

No one comes out of Lake Laogai the same person they were when they went in.

This is the story she wrote for me and I couldn't be happier. Iroh gets his mind back and the Gang gets an honorary uncle.

In other news, there's a Netflix Originals Exchange on AO3 that I'm seriously contemplating signing up for. Sign-ups close August 31st so, if you, like me, are indecisive, you have some time to make up your mind.

redrikki: Damian Wayne as Robin (Damian Wayne)
So, Thursday recs are a thing, apparently, and I have some recs for you.

1. Fic exchanges

[tumblr.com profile] ao3tagoftehday is hosting a charitable fic/art exchange for folks interested in helping immigrants in detention by donating to one of the several charities helping to bail them out. The post with the sign-up information can be found here.[tumblr.com profile] attackfish started the trend, offering to write 100 words of Avatar: the Last Airbender fic for every dollar donated to either Refugee and Immigrant Center for Education and Legal Services (RAICES) or Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS). As of now, I have signed up to write for [tumblr.com profile] ao3tagoftheday's exchange. I urge you to sign up, donate, or both.

2. Fic

[archiveofourown.org profile] fadesfanfic has been writing an amazing series around Damian Wayne and his introduction to the Bat family and they are so damn good.

Batman and Son Rewrite is what it says on the tin: a re-write of the Batman & Son comic in a way that makes both Damian and Bruce more sympathetic and consistent with their later characterization. All the Batfam feels.

Resurrection of Ra's Al Ghul One-Shots
picks up where the last story left off and covers the next Damian-centered arc in the comics and actually deals with the emotional fall out.

How to Make Something New is an on-going look at Damian, Dick, and Alfred struggling to figure each other out in the wake of Bruce's 'death.'

redrikki: Orange cat, year of the cat (Default)
A couple of exchanges went live yesterday, so now that I've had time to read them, I figured I'd share my favorites.

Hurt Comfort Exchange

I actually participated in this one! I can't show you mine yet because the authors are still a secret, but I got a really swell gift.

All Similar Sorrow - Gwen struggles during an anniversary. Peter can relate. (Spiderman: Into the Spider-verse)
Gwen and Peter bond over getting the alternate versions of their friends killed and its touching and cathartic.

Other stuff from the exchange you should check out includes:

Looking for My Happiness Now
- A mishap reverts Peter's body to his 16 year old self. But this story is about Gwen Stacy. (Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse) Another Gwen and Peter bond over getting the alternate versions of their friends killed story and I could literally read a million of them if they were all this good.

Dreaming of Yesterday - Vanya wakes up in her thirteen-year-old body after Five has time-traveled them as the world was ending. None of the others seem to have their adult memories, and being the only adult in a group of teenagers will give Vanya a new perspective on her siblings. (Umbrella Academy) Vanya gets her youth back and grows the hell up.

Wayback Exchange

I thought long and hard about signing up for this, but it came due at the same time as the Hurt Comfort Exchange, so I didn't. It was probably a good choice considering how hard I struggled to find the motivation to write anything in the last couple of months. Still, there was some really fun stuff in there. Here are my top three.

Be It Ever So Humble -"Can't be homesick when you're home," Kaylee says. The captain doesn't say anything, but from the proud look on his face, he agrees. "Maybe don't tell your Daddy that." (Firefly) Lovely character study of our favorite mechanic.

Makeshift League - It's good for them. That doesn't mean they are good at it. (DC Animated Universe: Timmverse) In which Bruce/Lois/Clark are an endearingly dysfunctional threesome.

A Mouse in the White House - The Brain has a plan to take over the world, starting with the Oval Office. But dealing with the 45th President might be harder than anticipated. (Pinky and the Brain) Blistering political satire featuring everyone's favorite lab rats and least favorite president.

Guess I forgot to do this last week. Woopsie!

Just Finished

A Grave's a Fine and Private Place by Allen Bradley. Our hero, the young Flavia de Luce, goes on holiday with her sisters and family retainer, only to stumble upon a body and series of mysteries along the river. As always, Flavia and Bradley's writing style were a delight, but I found myself a little underwhelmed by the ultimate solution to the mystery. Spoilers ) Oh, well. Honestly, though, it might just be me. I usually don't read mysteries because they either feel blindingly obvious or so opaque I end up feeling dumb when the solution comes along. I mostly just love this series for Flavia's thought process.

You may have noticed that this took me forever to finish and I can only blame one thing: fanfiction. A few months back, my mom got me a tablet and now, instead of reaching for a book, every time I settle on the couch I reach for the internets. Lately I've been on an Umbrella Academy and Misfits kick, mostly thanks to Robert Sheehan. I'm ace, dude. Why are you so damn compelling? Anyhow, here's some stories to recommend if you're into those fandoms:

Misfits

Misfits Moments series by [archiveofourown.org profile] runrarebit  An Simon/Nathan AU that kicks off in season one and does some interesting things to the plot. Seriously good characterization and voices. Lots of fun and currently on-going.

Umbrella Academy

An Eye For An Eye by [archiveofourown.org profile] dgalerab. When Five takes them back at the end of season 1, he creates an alternate timeline. Now they're back in the present with a past they can't remember trying to prevent a whole new apocalypse. Currently a WIP, but only two chapters left to go.

redrikki: Orange cat, year of the cat (Default)
I wrote over 2,000 words spread across 8 stories this month in She-Ra & the Princesses of Power, Star Wars, and one fandom which shall remain nameless until the exchange is revealed in February.

She-Ra & the Princesses of Power

Parting Strands
Adora and Catra have always looked out for each other, but Adora's beginning to suspect that's over. Her thoughts on "Promise."

Star Wars

Everything this month was based on John Mulaney quotes. Despite their comedic origins, the stories all got rather angsty. Oh well.

"Whats that? Over there! Don't do that!" with Obi-Wan (and Anakin) on tumblr or AO3
"I think I'm becoming more like my mom" with Anakin on tumblr or AO3
"My life is a freaking nightmare" with Anakin (and Padme) on tumblr or AO3
"It's easier to do nothing rather than something" with Palpatine on tumblr or tumblr or AO3
"When people are mad at it, it's my fault" with Anakin (and Obi-Wan) on tumblr or AO3

Mystery story was written for the Past Imperfect Future Unknown exchange which will go live on Saturday and be revealed on the Saturday after that. Spoiler alert, it involves time travel and is awesome.

Now that I'm done tooting my own horn, I'll take a moment to toot someone else's with some recs. This month I've mostly been reading Into the Spiderverse stuff. Here are my favorites:

It's a School Night, Why Are You Out Saving the World? by TechnicolorVocab01

After the events of the film, Jefferson is determined to be more supportive of both Miles and the new Spiderman. It takes him a while to figure out they are one and the same.

Lay it on the Line by badgerpride89

Nine months after the collider, Miles has been meeting up with Gwen and Peter for lunch every Saturday. Naturally, this attracts his parents' attention. This is part of the series Afterward. All the stories in it are good, but this is my favorite.

Spider-Man is Dead (Long Live Spider-Man) by tajargirl

Series of four short stories focusing on the death of Peter Parker in the lives of every Spider. Including Peter Parker.

redrikki: Orange cat, year of the cat (Default)
Merry whatever to whom ever is celebrating!

I got my Yuletide gift and it is everything I hoped for and more.

Spider-Man: Junior Prom
Queer Eye\ MCU Spider-Man
The Fab Five help get Peter ready for his Junior Prom and it's exactly as hilarious as you'd expect.

I'm off to see Into The Spiderverse, but I'll have some thoughts on that and Yuletide recs later.
