Emotionally abducted by aliens
May. 16th, 2019 09:27 pmOn Sunday, I started watching Roswell, New Mexico. I'd enjoyed the original series back in the day, and I figured it would just be a rehash, but it was so much better. Instead of being a high school drama, everyone was an adult dealing with adult things like failing marriages, caring for ailing parents, and unraveling murder mysteries and government conspiracies. Those weren't the only changes. There was a whole lot of race bending going on with pretty much everyone but the three main aliens being Hispanic, black or Native American. The one of the three central romances was between two men and I swear it was like watching fanfic.
One of the most striking things about it was how unapologetically political it was. Literally the first scene featured an extended rant about racism, policing, and America's current immigration policy. Xenophobia and America's treatment of immigrants and refugees were central themes of show. There were repeated digs at the president, plus a few more at lax gun laws, US foreign policy, and racial bias generally. Between this show, Black Lightning and Charmed, it's clear what the CW is daring to defy.
Other things I liked:
every actor's sad puppy eyes
Liz being brilliant and bad ass
Michael and Alex and their entire romance
The on point music cues
The way every episode name was a song title
Anyhow, if any of you have good fic recs for the fandom, I all ears.
